Summary

Franny Bettinger (Mary Stuart Masterson), an affluent 16 year old from Philadelphia, volunteers in a city shelter for children who are wards of the state. Full of committment to make a difference in the lives of these disadvantaged girls, Franny is met with suspicion, coldness, and hostility. She decides to persist in spite of the objection of the home's director Ike Bailey (James Earl Jones) and her parents (Pamela Payton-Wright and Peter Michael Goetz) and finds strength in the support and guidance of her grandmother. As Franny makes progress, she orchestrates a talent show. But when a girl is unexpectedly transferred to a brutal rural center, Frannie embarks on a rescue mission with Kai (Peter Gallagher), the sleazy pimp boyfriend of Alice (Traci Lind) one of the girls in the shelter. Kai leaves her stranded miles from anywhere. Her actions get her fired but she is determined to oversee Talent Night and watch the girls from the shelter shine. Franny's life is forever changed by her contact with a new and different world.
